EVERY GRAIN OF SAND

This is my favourite thing that Dad ever wrote. This was the speech he delivered at the Online Cyber Security Expo in 2007. I cry every time I read it.

Every Grain Of Sand. Just think about it. Every Grain Of Sand. Each one has such an insignificant amount of weight and can be tossed around on beach endlessly, never knowing where it will end up, never knowing upon which beach it will finally fall. But the beauty in each grain is incomparable

For far too long, our approach to information, data and the security of these have been in correlation to free flowing, uncaring and never ending movement of those grains of sand. But in each grain is beauty and if cherished, nurtured and secured, can become part of the treasure you call your life. The beach is the database and it is time we evolve our awareness, implementation and guidelines.

We all need to adopt the mindset that security should not be optional or an afterthought. It has to be embedded into our culture. We must understand its inner workings and ensure that cybersecurity is approachable and accessible to all.
